6 ways to take care of yourself for a more relaxed life
A tough month at work or the end of a long week at home can be stressful. It's easy to get swept up in the negative emotions that arise during such stressful times and to forget to take care of ourselves in the process.
We often feel the need to avoid the thoughts and feelings that stem from that stress. That is why it is essential to implement ways to take care of yourself. But self-care isn't just luxury on the weekends or a few weeks in the summer.
It can be a practice that you do daily, even throughout your week. It’s one of the most powerful tools for mental health. It can greatly enhance your capacity to both enjoy and cope with whatever life brings.
Taking time to practice self-care can benefit your mind and body enormously, especially during challenging times.
It can be helpful to be intentional about taking time to practice self-care, to do some things we enjoy doing that are relaxing and nourishing. It can help us slow down, breathe and give ourselves the chance to evaluate our situation and our feelings.
So, what are some of the ways we can apply in our daily routine?
1. Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your health and well-being. Water is the vital fluid your body needs to function more efficiently.
It is often said that you should drink 6 to 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Just try drinking less than that and notice the lack of energy, stomach discomfort, and headaches you get throughout the day.
The importance of staying hydrated every day, without fail, is that if you’re dehydrated, you’ll be more tired almost all the time. Drinking enough water daily will help reduce fatigue and improve your mood.
2. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is the best way to restore the body, and it is also the best way to restore the mind.
People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to experience insomnia. Insomnia can cause many health issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, anger, stress, stress, and much more. It is very important to get some good sleep at night.
It is recommended that if you're a teen try getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night and if you're older than 18 then 7-9 hours of sleep.
3. Stay active and exercise
Exercise not only benefits your physical health but also enhances your mental health. Physical activity can relieve stress, improve your mood and help you sleep better. It can also aid in the treatment of depression and anxiety.
But it doesn’t have to be done in the form of weight lifting or high-intensity intervals. Even simple forms of exercise can improve your mood and help you sleep better.
Having a regular exercise schedule can create a positive impact on your overall well-being.
4. Unplug from technology
In this modern-day world, it is hard to keep our hands and eyes off our devices.
Checking our phones the minute we wake up in the morning is something we all do/have done. A study from IDC Research shows that almost 80% of smartphone users check their phones within 15 minutes of waking up every morning. To be triggered at the start of your day by seeing various news/events shown online would not be the ideal way to set out your day. Prioritize yourself first in the morning.
Also, take some time off social media to decompress as it does get very overwhelming at times.
Journaling or writing in a diary has always been an important method of self-expression and reflection. Journaling is a way to reflect on and express one’s thoughts on life.
An individual could write about anything and for many individuals, it is a way to unwind. Although journals have been around for centuries, the journaling trend has been on the rise recently.
Many of us might be going through various things within ourselves that we are unable to express on the outside.
Pouring your thoughts out onto paper or your device can give a sense of relief. It will help us to think, organize and have a clearer perspective on things.
6. Have a routine
Just compare a well-planned day from the minute you wake up to a day that doesn't have any direction at all. Which one brought you the most anxiety?
By preparing a daily routine you are more in control and ready to face whatever comes at you. When you are organized and follow through with your actions, there is a great flow and sense of accomplishment in doing what you have set out to do.
When you are prepared you will have something to look forward to. Your life will be filled with excitement and the things that you have prepared will become a part of your life.
Try practicing these ways to improve your self-care, in feeling more content and relaxed.
